This is the first of a series of video on swish patterns...

Swish patterns are so powerful because they help reprogram automatic thought processes. If you're an NLP practitioner or hypnotherapist, the vast majority of people that come to you, do so either because they need an automatic thought process they don't have, or because they have an automatic thought process that's not working for them.

If you're not a therapist (and even if you are), you can use these patterns for your own benefit.

Here's an example. Take someone who has a fear of spiders. They see a spider and "boom," they immediately feel panic. That's an automatic thought process. They don't do it consciously or on purpose.

Take somebody that has low self-esteem. Let's say they see someone they'd like to meet, but they begin to have thoughts about all the things that could go wrong or maybe all the things that went wrong in the past when they tried to meet somebody. Thos thoughts may manifest as shyness or low self-esteem. Again, that's an automatic thought process.

Somebody that wants to stop smoking, but every time the phone rings and they pick it up, they automatically find a cigarette in their hands--it's a subconscious process--an automatic thought process that leads to an automatic behavior.

The problem with most self-help methods, most pop psychology and most counseling, is that they try to get at these subconscious processes through the conscious mind. That's the slow and ineffective way to do it.

The swish pattern helps you get in there, intervene at just the right point and "shhhoooop," send those thoughts off on a new direction. And that is the power of the swish pattern. It can be used in habit control, it can be used in phobias, in can be used as a component in almost any situation where you're working to help a person.

In the next videos, we'll get into specifically how to do these swish patterns.
