The New Breed of Professionals: Leaving Traditional Jobs for Meaningful Careers
Self-help philosophy, Oprah, Dr. Phil and more. Today’s information age is breeding a whole new brand of entrepreneurs; in fact millions of North Americans now work from home, while others are finding the work of their dreams at middle age. Holistic counselors, multi-level marketing, career coaches and a slew of other professions, to numerous to mention are opening doors to new possibilities for thousand of people who are yearning for more than just financial gain, but a feeling of freedom, creative satisfaction and autonomy that comes from an out-of the box profession.
(PRWEB) February 21, 2005 — Georgina Cannon was once a senior public relations executive. She earned $300,000 a year, plus bonuses, heading the Canadian office of an international consulting firm, Burson Marsteller. Today, she runs a hypnosis clinic that helps people quit smoking, lose weight and conquer their fear of public speaking.
“I took a course in hypnotherapy in 1997 and knew that was what I wanted to do,” says Cannon, who’s in her 50s and has a grown daughter. The transition was not easy. She sold her house, her paintings, her jewellery and traded in her big car for a leased Saturn.
What does she miss about her past life as CEO? “Not being able to get away on holiday in February,” she says. “Before, I used to go to spas and take holidays all over the world, as an adjunct to business travel. But I don’t have that sort of money now.”
As do many others who switch into alternative healing, Cannon loves her work. “I see people walking out of the clinic and saying, `I feel so great.’ It’s very gratifying. “In the business world, people live in constant fear. They worry they won’t make their numbers or the boss won’t like what they do. Nothing is ever good enough. That’s an awful way to live.”
As someone who went from a high-powered PR boss to self-employed healer, she has a few tips to impart to others.
- Understand what you’re good at in the business world and what skills you can transfer to another career. Strength in team-building, for example, is something you can take with you to your next life.
- Don’t get caught up in a corporate title, such as CEO. Look at why you were hired in the first place, what made you effective and how you got where you are. Those are the attributes you carry with you.
- If you’re successful at what you’re doing now, you know what it takes to succeed at something else. Develop the confidence that you won’t fail. Even if your next venture is a flop, you’ll move onto something else that will work.
Cannon didn’t know what her next career would be after selling the Canadian operations of Burson Marsteller. “I didn’t plan to turn this into a business,” she says. “I just wanted to use hypnosis to help people find their own magic. But when I started teaching and hiring others to work in the clinic, I realized I had a business.”
She worked out of a wellness centre for the first two years, then signed a seven-year lease for space in a medical-dental building near Bloor and Bay St. Her financial adviser was aghast, she says, but she knew the high-priced surroundings would give her more credibility. “I have to clear $10,000 a month to cover expenses. That’s my nut.”
Self-employed people should figure out how much they need to make to cover their costs and add 30 per cent on top as the minimum to make each month, she says. Teaching provides the revenue that funds the rest of Cannon’s work. Several times a year, she gives an accredited hypnosis training course of 100 hours, spread over three weekends. An average of 30 people per class pay $1,600 each and can practice immediately after graduation.
