    Hypnosis in the News 03/10/05

    Hypnosis in the news:

This time I’m doing something different with the “hypnosis in the news” segment. Recently, there’s been a spate of bad press concerning hypnosis and in particular, the actions of a few unethical or unskilled practitioners. The two problem areas seem to be implanting false memories and unsanctioned client/hypnotist relations. You should know about these areas to both protect yourself and speak intelligently if these subjects are brought up.

So although this segment is negative in tone, It can be very positive in helping us conduct ourselves professionally and safely.

    False Memory Syndrome
During testimony yesterday, clinical psychologist John Boyd of Charlottesville said hypnosis can heighten imagination and make someone more vulnerable to suggestions. He also said someone’s “recollection after hypnosis could be false or it could be true.”

    More on False Memories
A former client testified Wednesday that she felt the doctor who performed the hypnosis led her… “I thought that he was manipulating that,” John said. “That’s what it looked like on that tape - like he was leading me by the nose.”

Licensure - would it prevent unethical hypnotists from practicing?
