Yet more to support the idea that we need to 'get out of our own way' when doing this work, and in particular, make sure that the sessions are ALL about the client, and not at all about US. If we effectively 'disappear' when a client enters the office, and become an open-mind, full of curiosity and questions, we can most effectively help the client get what THEY want. Well said, Keith!

I think if you are asking questions from 'within' a theory about the source of a problem, you run the risk of asking leading questions.

Great post, Keith. One quick note on #9. Not only is there danger in having our own pet theories about a client's issue, it's also important to dig out the client's theory.

I had a client that yelled at me for asking her why she believed she hadn't yet overcome her binge eating (a common NLP question). I ascertained that she truly believed that I, as a hypnotherapist, should just put her under and tell her to stop eating. Of course, I didn't. But, it was a good reminder. Assume nothing.

Great article...I believe as we continue to practice our craft an attitude of "no mind is good mind" is something worth while to cultivate. This comes from an old zen koan. Having the mind of no mind, we can actually operate from the "field of all possibilities". Having preconceptions or a one size fits all, puts ourselves and the client in the box.

As far a past life regression goes, it is my belief that it is all metaphor regardless... I get calls frequently for past life regression and I simply tell them I do "present life trance-formations! I have found a number of folks who want to know about a past life, and what is uncovered is they are lacking mindfulness and full attention in their present life.
Great Blog, Keith!

Great article, I'm currently enrolled in a hypnotherapy course myself at the moment at The Morpheus Clinic in Toronto and they stand behind this viewpoint.

Although past life regression and the like are very helpful for some people it seems that for many people it takes away some credibility of the practice.

Really well explained and non threatening :)

Product plug from me today. If you have not yet purchased Keith's Metaphors and Advanced Metaphors now is the time to get it. That is a very good teaching tool IMO. Would be best to first read Gordon's Therapeutic Metaphors a few times over, sit down at your pc and key out about 200 or so 'metamuffins'. Then, go for Keith's product. It will push you over the edge from good to great. With great admiration for a great instructor~MargieAnne

PS- I don't know why Milton wanted people to get married and to send him presents. Perhaps it was because he greatly loved his family and presents are always welcome and that in return reminds me of one of my favorite "Milton" books ~Hope and Resiliency~ by two of his daughters and Dan Short.

Happy Easter and Stay Well!

Very good points! With regards to relying too strongely on pet theories: sometimes it is helpfull to have them when asking questions and having a sense of what could be going on, but it is indeed not necessescary with regards to treatment: that is where the confusion comes from. Knowing how some problems can come about, doesn't say anything about how to treat them, even though those 'pet theories'often imply it takes alsmost as many years to treat those problems, as they are in existence. Luckily, that is not the case, as we know with NLP and hypnotherapy!

I remember talking to a couple of people recently who were taking a hypnotherapy certification that included a unit on spirit guides. Hey, if spirit guides are your thing, that's cool. But as part of a certification course? I don't see how it helps the field in general. I guess it's hard for some people to separate out the various aspects of their belief systems into "mainstream" and "other" - especially if they've lost track of the very helpful notion that beliefs are just ideas, like all those other ideas out there.
